One of the delights of Puerto is that we all get to be locavores - people who eat locally grown food. Our award-winning coffee comes from a coffee farm only 90 minutes away in the mountains of San Juan Lachao, our meat is raised right here in San Pedro Mixtepec and Colotepec, and our fish comes straight out of the sea. We even have organic peanut butter made from locally grown peanuts. In the U.S. you can buy imported mangos all year round, but they are nothing like Puerto’s fresh mangos. And, of course, there is the mescal.
There has been a lot of research about the benefits of drinking coffee, especially for older people. But another, lesser-known benefit, is that shade-grown coffee is good for the environment. Every time you have a cup of Oaxacan coffee you are helping to save the cloud forest – including the birds and animals – and also protecting the water tables. Without the coffee farms, we would face deforestation as the land was cleared for full-sun crops.
