The Casa de Cultura

by Li Valenzuela

The Casa de Cultura in the Agua Marina district between the Benito Juárez Market and Av. Salinas de Gortari plays a very important role in the cultural formation of Puerto’s children and adults.

It is there that trainer Shirley Arias supervises 50 girls from the ages of six to 16 in the Club Gimnasia Rítmica Petit Olín, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. For young people and adults who want to practice regional dances, the Grupo Folclórico de Puerto Escondido offers classes in Sones and Chilenas. The group represents Puerto in various State-sponsored events. They rehearse on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 5 pm.

Noel Robles Suastegui is directing a new dance program called Negritud Contemporánea. For more information go to their Facebook page or ask at the Casa de Cultura.

There are also workshops in guitar and wind instruments. Children have the opportunity of learning English through classes held from Monday to Friday at 5 pm. There is an English course for adults on Saturdays and Sundays at 5 pm too. Many of these classes are free. The Casa de Cultura offers weekend courses in aerobics, literature and painting for a small fee.

The re-modeled Biblioteca Amado Nervo, at the entrance to the Casa de Cultura, was inaugurated in November. The design by Tequio Bufet with its bright colors and low tables is child-friendly. Anyone can consult reference books in the reading room or take out a wide array of novels, short stories, and poetry, as well as books on history, science and technology from its collections of over 3,500 titles. You just have to register at the circulation desk.

The library has computers and Wi-Fi to help the older students with their homework. It is open from 9 to 1 and 3 to 7, Monday through Friday and Saturday from 9 to 1.
