The cool thing about being a magazine publisher is that you get to decide the content. The hard part is getting to figure out what your reader wants. It’s a kind of dialogue. Obviously, I’m more interested in the Virgin of Juquila than I am in surfing. My favorite piece in this issue is about the War of the Pants. Just one of those things every school child in Oaxaca should know, but doesn’t.

Also of interest is the article on a new migratory trend in Mexico away from big cities. This is happening in China too. Time was when people from the countryside moved to the city for a better life. Now some people are leaving Mexico City and other Mexican metropolises for a better life in Puerto Escondido. They mostly do not surf (except the net), but they like the vibe.

Before I was a journalist, I was a poet, and I still am. You can buy my latest, bilingual book, Strategies / Estrategias at Casa 12, on calle Oaxaca in the Punta and at Finca Las Nieves on Zicatela, next to the Hotel Santa Fe.
