Roca Blanca
WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A BIGGER BEACH WITH fewer people on it, and restaurants with hammocks for all, then it’s time to head up the coast to Roca Blanca. It’s good for surfing in the late afternoon. There are also cabañas, if you want to spend a few days of peace and quiet on the beach.
Named for its large rock made white by guano (bird droppings), Roca Blanca is about 30 minutes west of Puerto on the highway 200, going to Pinotepa Nacional. It’s the Sunday beach for families from Río Grande, but don’t be surprised when you run into people from Puerto there too.

The highway turn-off for Roca Blanca takes you through the village of Cacalotepec (also called Cacalote) and then two kilometers on a dirt road through a wooded area. Roca Blanca is famous for its evangelical mission center, affiliated with the Victory Bible Institute of Tulsa, Oklahoma. If you reach the mission, you’ve taken a wrong turn. Keep to the right.
