Welcome to Puerto Escondido where you can’t always count on the electricity or the internet, but which still maintains its charm. Everyday new people arrive from Mexico City, Europe, Australia, the Americas from Canada to Argentina, and they all feel they have discovered a very special place. They love the beaches, the night life, the slow pace. They ask me how things have changed in the 20 years I have lived here. Mostly for the better, I respond, especially thanks to the new highway that connects us to the City of Oaxaca.

As ever, this issue is a mix of topics that represent the various communities that never seem to mix here. So, we feature the Fiesta de San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of La Barra de Colotepec, which ran from May 12 to 17, and the International Day of Art which attracted a different crowd. One thing that does unite the people who call Puerto their home is the smoke the winds send from fires in the garbage dumps of San Pedro Mixtepec and Santa María Colotepec. See The Down and Dirty in Puerto Escondido.
