Mexico is famous for its artisanal fireworks, especially the “Castillos” — the large wooden frames that emit rockets and flares in intricate designs. The castillos are the high point of the annual fiestas in Nopala and Chila as well as in Puerto’s Lázaro Cárdenas.The fiestas all feature regional dances, and those of Chila and Lázaro Cárdenas also include jarapeo rodeos and other traditional events. Lázaro Cárdenas is the community next to the Batallón (army base). Nopala is an hour to the north of Puerto Escondido on Highway 131. Chila is around 10 minutes west of Puerto on Highway 200.
There is free cinema on Bacocho beach every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Club de Playa of the Hotel Villa Sol. The films have English or Spanish subtitles. Call the hotel for info, (954) 582 0350.
