Highway Expansion from Pochutla to Huatulco
COASTAL HIGHWAY 200 THAT CONNECTS PUERTO ESCONDIDO with Huatulco, including the Huatulco airport, is four lanes until you get to Pochutla. There the two-lane road goes through the mountains and there are many dangerous curves and many accidents. Last year work began on widening that 26 km stretch from 7 meters to 12 meters. Work was supposed to be finished by last December.
Work ended in December with only a few kms completed, but not paved. All construction materials had been removed. On January 30, the Secretary of Infraestructura, Comunicaciones, and Transportation (SICT) of Oaxaca announced that bids were now being processed and it is expected that work would start again at the end of February.
That’s the good news. The bad news is that we may expect more Telmex internet outages as the fiberoptic cables that line the highway fall victim to the heavy machinery. At least that was what happened during last autumn’s construction. (See Viva Puerto #44).
