IF YOU FIND A CROCODILE IN YOUR HOUSE, DON’T PANIC, just call Protección Civil (954 582 3538) and they will take it to the Crocodile Sanctuary in La Ventanilla, Santa María Tonameca. (Not to be confused with the Ventanilla in Santa María Colotepec.) Take highway 200 to the Mazunte exit and you’ll see a sign for Ventanilla.
Around an hour from Puerto Escondido, Ventanilla is our favorite place to take visitors. It is a small community which makes its living through ecotourism. For a $200-peso contribution you can take a boat ride in the crocodile filled lagoon. You don’t need to make a reservation, and you pay at the end of the tour. Be sure to wear a hat for the sun.
